Stalos was named after Talos, the bronze giant who circled Crete three times a day and protected it. According to legend, Talos had his home in the area of the present day Stalos. However, a second stronger view holds that "Stalos" took its name from the period of Ottoman rule, when Ottoman landowners stopped with their flocks so as to rest (or get stalled) in the area, that is, they gathered them for rest under the shade of the trees in the area before taking them to the neighboring town of Galatas for milking. The same interpretation exists for many other place names in Crete, such as Stalida (Heraklion). Note that the English word stall has the same Greek origin.
