Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Casa Cicala an ideal location for exploring this part of south Crete, but a car is essential. The quirky ex-hippie beach town of Matala is just 20 minutes drive away. The Palace of Phaistos is around the same drive-time away, and the archaeological centre of Gortys and the newly-built archaeological museum are even closer. Supermarkets can be found in nearby Moises. The house has good air-conditioning and two very good-size bedrooms, both of which have a TV (please note, however, that the main living room does not have a TV). The shower / toilet room is modern with piping-hot water and a good size sink and shower. Unfortunately the kitchen is rather small, but there is a large fridge/freezer. The covered patio area at the front of the property is nice, but see the caveats below. The owner, Marika, was delightful and met us on arrival. She gave us some pastries, some Raki and permission to enjoy as many oranges from the trees as we liked during our stay.

Negative: Casa Cicala has quite extensive grounds with orange and other fruit trees, but these are so numerous that it makes for a rather claustrophobic experience with no views of the surrounding area under the almost continuous low canopy surrounding the property. Also note that the entrance to Casa Cicala is narrow and on a bend on the busy main road, so extra care is needed particularly at night. The neighbouring property has dogs which barked incessantly well into the evening most days when we were there, so peace and quiet was unfortunately in short supply.

Summary: Nice-size house, lovely owner - but not always as peaceful as it looks.
