Location & Directions There are two ways to reach the island of Crete: BY BOAT: From Piraeus port, daily departures to Souda port of Chania or to the port of Heraklio. BY PLANE: There are two international airports on the island: in Chania and in Heraklio. DISTANCES Chania Airport: 33m (35 min. drive) Souda Port of Chania: 19km (25min. drive). Heraklion Port or Airport: 121 km (two hour drive). From Chania airport or Souda port: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymno. Take the highway. At the junction to Kalyves/ Armenoi take the exit at your right and then turn left destination to Kalyves village. Enter Kalyves and follow the signs to Gavalochori. Continue the way to Gavalochori for 5km. Take the turn to Gavalochori at your left. After 300m turn left to Ntouliana Village. Enter the village and follow the signs to Cretan Family Villa. From airport or harbour of Heraklio: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymno – Chania. Take the highway. Pass all the exits to Rethymno and continue, headed in the direction Chania. After Georgioupolis take the exit to Vrysses, Vamos and follow the signs to Vamos. After Vamos drive for another 5km and at the junction with the sign to Gavalochori turn right. After 300m turn left to Ntouliana Village. The village of Douliana is located in the Apokoronas and can be accessed via a junction on the route between Gavolochori and Vamos. On the sign for the exit it says "Ntouliana" on any road map I know ii says "Douliana", and as the latter spelling you also pronounce the name of the village. The road to the village is about a kilometer from this exit. Douliana is a nice and quiet village which is mainly characterized by the many flowers that you can find here. Especially numerous bougainvillas in the shape of shrubs and trees purple colour the village, but also there are bushes with yellow and other colours of flowers. In the village of Douliana there os a small World War II monument and there are two churches. One is a mini-church, which in my opinion looked fairly new, but appeared to be from the 19th century(?). The other church is a bit more substantial and dates from 1888. There are a few narrow streets in Douliana with nice old stone houses but there are also quite a lot of (beautiful) newly built villas that are rented out. During our visit in early October 2013, most of those villas looked empty and sometimes even the pools were already emptied. There is a mini-market and a kafenion and there are two tavernas in the village: one at the beginning when you drive into the village and the other at the very end of the road, which leads to a kind of square. From here a path leads towards Gavalochori. On the way to Gavalochori you will encounter the beautiful cave church of Agios Ioannis.
